El Club de la Salud
In order to address the disproportionate affect of obesity on the Latino population, the Promotores de Salud have implemented the “Club de la Salud”/Health Club program that includes education on nutrition, exercise clinics, one-on-one counseling with a nutritionist and referrals for medical screenings.
This project contributes in reaching the Governor’s Wellness Goals of reducing the percentage of adults who are overweight or obese, reducing the percentage of adults who eat less that 5 servings daily of fruits and vegetables, and reducing the percentage of adults who do not exercise regularly. In addition, this program is in-sync with the Healthy Rhode Islanders Leading Health Indicators: LHI1: Physical Activity (1.1); LHI2 Overweight and Obesity (2.1 & 2.3); and LHI10: Access to Health Care (10.2) objectives.

Group Exercise Sessions: Sessions utilize both DVD and live sessions with a professional trainer. In these sessions participants participate in Zumba - a fusion of salsa and aerobics to a Latin beat. Our experience is that participants love the program and variety it provides. Zumba is also geared to different ability levels and allows for increasingly longer and more difficult sessions.

Support Group: We have found that our participants when trying to lose weight and stay motivated need advice and support from their peers. To address this need the Promotora de Salud facilitates a group that allows El Club members to share stories and challenges as they make healthy lifestyle changes.
